The Spring/Summer season is fast approaching. Designers in Paris and Milan are showing us that we should not set our sights on ostentatious crazes and motley creations. However, there are some exciting flavours and novelties to look out for. It is going to be really interesting! So let’s take a look at what we can expect to see in the spring/summer 2024 season. NOTE: The order is completely random

1. The great return of 90s minimalism

It should be modest, elegant and functional. Simple forms, high-quality materials, classics at their best, but without imposing luxury. Discreet and even a little boring at first glance. But appearances can be deceptive, as the whole is complemented by perfectly balanced modern details.

2. Muted colours

After the fiery red that dominated winter, the time has come for calm, muted, pastel colours. For the SS/24 season, Wgsn and Colori offer cool blue (Elemental Blue), muted lime (Cyber Lime), heather pink (Fondant Pink), milky chocolate brown (Nutshell) and poppy red (Radiant Red). Grey, beige and the classic black and white will also work well. The total look in white will be a hit. It’s worth mentioning that Pantone’s colour of the year is Peach Fuzz – a peachy pink that brings a sense of calm and security in opposition to troubled and difficult times.

3. Transparent materials

Transparency of all kinds brings a touch of extravagance to calm trends. Most fashion designers (e.g. Carolina Herrera, Prada or Altuzarra) say that transparent fabrics for simple midi skirts or long-sleeved blouses are a must-have this season. Plain mesh models are king, but appliqués and embroideries on transparent fabrics and knits are also very popular.

4. Micro & High

Micro shorts, which are de facto more like boxer shorts than the shorts we are used to, are also an undeniable trend. The shorter the better. Paired with a long jacket or trench, the effect can be really interesting. However, if you’re not a fan of ultra-short shorts, it’s worth considering another ‘trouser’ trend: the ‘fishtail’ or capri trousers are back in favour. If this doesn’t convince you either, wear ultra high-waisted trousers and skirts – this will also make you look intriguing and on-trend.

5. Metallic shine

Go boldly for metallic gold and silver. Fabrics and knits with metallic thread or foil are a hit this season. Although these two colours will dominate the metallic edition, let’s not be afraid to experiment with shiny greens or blues either. Metallic finishes and satin sheen are a must have! Not only for special occasions, but also for everyday wear. Sequins, lurex and all things criss-cross also come into play.

6. Tassels

Despite the predominant trend towards minimalism, in some places polite tailoring forms break out of the imposed order and become dynamic in the form of tassels and fringes. As a finishing touch to skirts, in dresses, at the waist or on sleeves – something should be going on. If not tassels, there can also be tufts of threads or fibres, joined together in irregular clusters on the garment and giving the impression of fur (Alexander McQueen, Rabanne, Schiaparelli).

7. Flowers, flowers everywhere

The undisputed winner in the category of prints for the spring-summer season is flowers. A classic edition of floral prints, intertwined with a painterly or even puerile vision of flowers. There are also strong floral accents in the form of appliqués, cut-outs, embossing, rosettes or embroidery. Floral embellishments at the waist, at the neck – a very expressive and feminine manifestation of spring in fashion.

8. Polka Dot

The classic black and white polka dots only marginally give way to florals on the podium. The best edition of polka dots is the one carrying associations with retro style, or combining them with a leather Ramones to give them a rock claw. Go with a colour palette of black and white only – this is the main key.

9: Denim total look

Denim is an absolute favourite for the spring-summer 2024 season, with the material dominating the catwalks in New York and Milan and paving a path for the total denim look that I’m sure many of us will want to follow. Choose creations that are thoroughly denim, from head to toe, but remember an important rule: the denim shade of each part of the outfit must be identical.

10. Lastly… Cut Outs

This is not a spectacularly new trend – body-exposing cut-outs in dresses have been in fashion before, but now we are presenting the world with, above all…. navels. A surprising and motivating look to inspire hard work in the gym.

We have highlighted just ten trends for the spring/summer 2024 season, which seem to be just a drop in the ocean of all the ideas and suggestions presented at shows in Paris, Milan or New York, in trade catalogues or at fashion fairs. We have tried to draw the essence from all the fashion sources available to us in order to at least tentatively sketch a picture of the trends for the coming Spring/Summer season.
