Sequins – A short story that speaks a thousand words

The name sequins derives from the Italian zecchino, a small coin minted in the 13th century. From the beginning, sequins were synonymous with wealth and prestige. Indeed, archaeological discoveries prove that King Tutankhamun himself wore robes decorated with gold discs resembling sequins. The paillettes gained their apogee of popularity in the 1920s. They aroused admiration but were incredibly heavy and thus uncomfortable to wear. For a while the idea of producing sequins from gelatine was practiced. Certainly, the dresses were lighter than their sequin predecessors, but when exposed to heat and moisture, the paillettes disappeared. They began to look for other solutions: film, polyester film, and acetate, and finally vinyl plastic. And it is from plastic that sequins are produced until now.

And what is it like today?

From royal courts and stages, sequins have made their way into everyday life and fashion. No longer can only dresses or other outfits can afford a sequins trim, but also other items of clothing, such as shoes, scarves, hats or handbags. All tricks are allowed.

Undoubtedly, sequins are a must-have in this season’s party closet as well. With properly selected accessories and cut of the outfit appropriate to the situation, they can be the base or decorative element of any styling. They will work well as material for sewing a dress for New Year’s Eve, a jacket for Christmas Eve, as well as pants for a carnival party. A sequined vest? Of course! Sequin top? By all means! In the case of this knitwear, we are limited only by the designer’s imagination.
